DESCRIPTION:Gino: A Child of War With Special Guest GINO FARNETTI-BRAGAGLIA\nPlease join us in the Sir John A Macdonald Building on Parliament Hill to meet Gino at 6pm on June 10th\, 2024! \nThe Gino story\, hardly known for many decades\, is now legendary! \nGino\, was an abandoned 5-years old orphan found by Canadian soldiers in war ruins of the Italian Campaign during the Second World War. These caring soldiers (Canadian guardian angels\, as Gino called them) refused to abandon him\, and kept him\, nurtured and schooled him for the rest of the campaign. They raised money to have him adopted and go to school. These soldiers stayed in touch with Gino until the last one died in July 2012. \nTogether with a small\, but mightily dedicated group of researchers and collaborators\, we have been working on the Gino project for over 12 years!\nI was honoured to represent Canada at a ceremony in his hometown of Torrice on 16 December 2012\, when Gino was given his true identity\, after years of research led by Mariangela Rondinelli and a group known as Wartime Friends. Gino was 74 years old! \nThe story of Gino and his Canadian guardian angels is now coming full circle\, with the 86-years old GINO FARNETTI-BRAGAGLIA COMING TO CANADA TO THANK THE FAMILIES OF HIS GUARDIAN ANGELS AND\, INDEED\, ALL CANADIANS. Moore \nThe Dante Alighieri Society of BC\, in collaboration with the Dante Alighieri Society of Ottawa\, invites you to discover all that is important to know about Alessandro Manzoni’s I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed\, Modern Library\, 2022). Originally published in 1827\, the most famous historical novel in the Italian language is a work of foundational Italian literature on par with Dante’s Divine Comedy and Boccaccio’s The Decameron. \nDr. Michael F. Moore’s new translation of The Betrothed brings to life Manzoni’s timeless literary masterpiece. \nAbout the book: \nThe Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi) is a cornerstone of Italian culture\, language and literature. Published in its final form in 1842\, it inspired generations of Italians. Giuseppe Verdi composed his majestic Requiem Mass in honor of Manzoni. Italo Calvino called the novel “a classic that has never ceased shaping reality in Italy” while Umberto Eco praised its author as a “most subtle critic and analyst of languages.” The Betrothed has been celebrated by Primo Levi and Natalia Ginzburg\, and is one of Pope Francis’s favorite books. But\, until now\, it has remained relatively unknown to English readers. \nAbout the speaker: \nDr. Michael F. Moore‘s translations range across genres\, from modern classics to contemporary fiction and non-fiction\, including most recently: The Drowned and the Saved\, by Primo Levi; Agostino\, by Alberto Moravia; Quiet Chaos\, by Sandro Veronesi; and Live Bait\, by Fabio Genovesi. He is currently working on a new translation of Moravia’s short story collection\, Rome Tales. \nFor many years Michael served as the chair of the PEN Translation Committee and\, subsequently\, as the Chair of the Advisory Board of the PEN/Heim Translation Grant. DESCRIPTION:The Dante Alighieri Society of Ottawa and the National Congress of Italian Canadians  \nare pleased to invite you to a special presentation by Prof. Fabrizio Lupo (Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo). \nProf. Fabrizio Lupo\, scenographer\, author and director with a particular interest in popular traditions and puppet theatre\, teaches “Teatro della Festa” at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo.  For 400 years\, every year\, in mid July\, the city of Palermo celebrates its Saint Patron\, Rosalia [Santa Rosalia]\, on the longest stage in the world\, the Cassaro\, an Arab name for the road that connects the old port with the Palace of the Normans.  The Festino\, born in the Baroque era\, is one of the oldest festivals in Europe and in this presentation prof. Lupo will relate the celebration of the life of the Santa Pellegrina with the stories narrated in the traditional “Opera dei Pupi“.  Two similar medieval traditions\, but opposite in contents: one of war\, the puppets\, and one of peace\, the Festino.  The symbol of the Festino for the Palermitans has always been the Triumphal Chariot\, and prof. Lupo has dedicated himself for many years to the creation of devotional and allegorical floats\, curating curating “Luminarie” [an italian traditional street illumination]\, as well as devising directions for operas\, various events and popular festivals.  As a curiosity\, prof. Lupo told us that George Evelyn Hutchinson\, father of modern ecology\, visiting Mount Pellegrino in the middle of the last century\, proposed St. Rosalia as the patroness of Biodiversity\, the “new” science that teaches how all animal and plants species and organisms work together to maintain balance and support life.  Since last March 2023\, prof.
